Tresa McAlhaney announced Wednesday that she filed the necessary documents to form a committee with the state to begin her campaign. She is joined on the ticket by Grant Nelson of Prairie Village as the lieutenant governor candidate.

As a member of a third party in Kansas, the candidates must be formally nominated by the Libertarian Party to be on the 2014 general election ballot.

Brownback is expected to seek re-election for a second term in 2014. He is yet to formally file for re-election.

Democrats have said they expect a candidate to step forward to challenge Brownback.
